Viva… New Mexico!?
I made it! Got into town (Las Cruces, NM) on Friday and have been driving around getting my bearings. I started hospital orientation on Monday and it’s been a lot of SUPER fun computer learning module work and listening to lectures about hospital policy. Did you catch the sarcasm there? Looking forward to getting started with the actual nursing work on the floor next week.
As far as the area goes, the weirdest thing is just how brown everything is! Where did all the green grass and the trees go?! Oh that’s right, I’m in the desert. It’s comical to see the “grass” in landscaped areas. Most of a yard or landscaped area consists of rocks with a small area of grass rimmed by slightly larger rocks to denote the boundaries. It’s as if they have small patches of grass that they water specifically so every dog in the neighborhood can come and use that small 10 by 10 area to go to the bathroom.
Oh, and there are no real trees! Sure there is a tree here and a tree there as you drive but they are stunted and sparse. Totally different than the forests of roads lined with trees from back east. It’s going to take a while to get used to. Oh but there were a lot of trees when I drove through the mountains of Lincoln National Forest on the last leg of my journey. I’ll have to drive up there to get my weekly tree hugging quota in. I am really looking forward to exploring all of the mountains in the area and doing some (hopefully) quality hiking. DC didn’t have much to offer in the mountains department and there are a couple good looking mountain ranges within an hour of Las Cruces, NM.
